Duties

Essential Job Functions
  • Models Coppell’s Core Competencies and Champions Coppell’s Culture
  • Manages property and evidence by cataloging, organizing, and maintaining them in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Maintains accurate records in the Records Management System (RMS) to ensure proper chain of custody from collection to final disposition.
  • Conducts regular audits and inventories of stored evidence to ensure proper security and documentation.
  • Coordinates the return, auction, or destruction of property and evidence in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Processes internal and external requests for evidence and provides courts with necessary reports related to courtroom testimony.
  • Work closely with department members, prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies to ensure proper evidence handling and testimony.
  • Provide testimony in court regarding the handling and storage of evidence, when required.
  • Participates in training and professional development programs to continuously enhance knowledge and skills, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services and alignment with departmental goals.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving property and evidence processes to increase efficiency, maintain the chain of custody and uphold the integrity of investigations.
  • Stay current with best practices, laws and advancements in evidence handling procedures.
  • Evidence Processing and Storage: Orders necessary supplies for the collection and storage of evidence in the processing room; Orders necessary supplies for officers to collect and store necessary property and evidence in the field.
  • Ad Hoc Tasks: Undertakes additional tasks as requested or required to contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Police Department.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Experience
  • Associate’s degree with coursework in criminal justice, criminal forensics, forensic science, constitutional law, crime scene technology, or crime scene management. Relevant training through a recognized property and evidence organization (such as TAPEIT or IAPE) may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • 2+ Years of Experience in law enforcement with direct responsibility for property and evidence room operations, including property/evidence management and court-ordered property disposition.
  • Must be eligible for Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification.
  • Must possess 1 Certification, or the ability to obtain within 12 months post-hire: Texas Association of Property/Evidence Inventory (TAPEIT) -OR- International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE)
  • Valid State of Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive knowledge of department policies, state and federal laws, and best practices.
  • Understanding of laws, rules, and guidelines governing the integrity, chain of custody, and disposal of property and evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of property and evidence handling procedures.
Skills
  • Proficiency in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, and policies to make informed decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear and concise interactions.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including evidence tracking software and Microsoft Office.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Abilities
  • Ability to give effective verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, other law enforcement agencies, judicial officials, and the public.
  • Capacity to work cooperatively, calmly, and diplomatically with a diverse public, various department segments, and external agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and maintaining the integrity of property and evidence processes.
