The Scientific Investigations Bureau of the Sheriff's Department of San Bernardino County is recruiting for Sheriff's Supervising Crime Scene Specialists who supervise a unit of Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists and provide administrative staff support. In addition, this class is expected to fully participate in crime scene investigations, as well as the review and approval of subordinate reports.

Positions in this class supervise a unit of Crime Scene Specialists and provide administrative staff support. Incumbents perform full-scope supervisory responsibilities and will be expected to participate in crime scene investigations. Positions report directly to the Crime Laboratory Director.

Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Supervises, coordinates, and oversees all activities within the investigation unit; assigns, reviews, and prioritizes investigative caseload.
  • Recommends hiring decisions and disciplinary actions to lab manager; evaluates staff's work performance.
  • Develops and maintains work schedules; ensures specialists are trained appropriately and have the necessary skills required to be successful as a crime scene specialist.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness.
  • Provides input and recommendations to policies and procedures for overall improvement to unit operations; provides input and support for budget preparation and management.
  • Performs regular administrative and technical reviews and critiques of various reports (e.g., examination, log, evidence, and overview reports); prepares a variety of records, reports, and correspondence to staff and other professionals.
  • Researches legislation, publications, and other agency's policies and procedures regarding current and future developments in forensic science and investigation procedures.
  • Collects and processes evidence at crime scenes as needed, including analyzing and interpreting bloodstain patterns and gunshot trajectories to determine circumstances and sequence of events, according to ASCLD/LAB and division requirements.
  • Attends and facilitates meetings; meets with staff to discuss unit performance, procedures, systems and personnel issues; coordinates activities with other units, divisions, departments, or agencies.
  • Responds promptly to time-sensitive incidents by driving either a personal or county vehicle to remote or distant locations as required, ensuring timely resolution and support based on the nature and urgency of the situation.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Experience:
  • Four (4) years of journey-level experience with primary responsibility for major crime scene investigations (e.g., homicides) that include collecting, documenting, photographing evidence, and latent fingerprint processing for a law enforcement agency.
  • All qualifying experience must be obtained in the field.
Desired Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have extensive experience processing a wide range of evidence from major crime scenes, including trace evidence, blood spatter, biological materials, firearms, gun trajectory, impression evidence, bomb/arson scenes, entomological evidence, and other general types of forensic evidence.
  • Additionally, the ideal candidate will be familiar with ANAB requirements.
  • Certification by the International Association for Identification is highly desirable.
