Evidence Supervisor

Salary: $72,000.00 - $88,000.00 Annually

This class is responsible for supervising and managing the activities of civilian employees assigned to the Evidence Unit. This class is responsible for receiving, securing and disposing of property and evidence under the control of the Evidence Unit. In addition, this class testifies in court and criminal proceedings regarding the storage, maintenance, findings and processing methods. Duties

Position Duties
The tasks below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary.
  • Plan, assign, schedule, supervise and evaluate work and activities of subordinate personnel.
  • Directs and evaluates the training process of new employees; and complies with on-going state and federal mandated training of employees.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of Unit specific equipment and systems and establishes procedures for the operation of these within state and federal guidelines, practices and procedures.
  • Functions as liaison to other agency units, other law enforcement agencies, public agencies, private business, as well as professional and community groups.
  • Handles and resolves personnel problems and issues within the unit.
  • Assists with budget research and preparation.
  • Develops and evaluates recommendations for changes in policies, procedures and practices through proposals and/or reports and implementing policy and procedures, and interpreting them for unit personnel to ensure adherence.
  • Evaluates and spot checks each unit member's skills and developmental progress and arranges training as needed.
  • Collects, maintains and provides operational and statistical information concerning staff needs, work procedures and backlog.
  • Responsible for providing quarterly, annual and time sensitive reports.
  • Testifies in courts of law as a technical expert.
  • Receives, labels and stores evidence/property and releases same to officers of court, crime lab, the general public and others; maintains integrity of evidence/property under control of Evidence Section.
  • Conducts extensive research for disposal of property no longer needed for evidentiary purposes and completes terminal disposition of property.
  • Transports or assigns designee to transport evidence to be analyzed to FDLE Crime Lab, Criminal Investigations Services or other agencies as required.
  • Audit/inventory K-9 training aid/drugs held by the K9 unit at least once a year. In addition, inventory and re-package any K9 drugs that seal/packaging has been compromised.
  • Replace/ add additional drugs to K9 Unit’s training aids with DEA and/or FDLE confirmed cases.
  • Prepare Memos to Command to include but not limited to K9 Inventory/Audit, Vehicle Impoundment Yard, Agency Use Items, Annual Inventory, etc.
  • Conduct annual inventory of Evidence Unit, (evidence and property), in accordance with per CFA Standards 27.13 M and 28.02 M.
  • Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Minimum Qualifications

Vocational/Educational Preparation:
  • HS diploma or equivalent.
Experience requirements:
  • Requires five (5) years of experience in property management/logistics/inventory control.
  • Minimum of four (4) years supervisory experience required. Supervisory experience in an evidence, property logistics and/or law enforcement environment preferred.
  • Requires experience working for a law enforcement agency. Sworn law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Special certifications and licenses:
Valid Class E Florida Driver's License
  • Must obtain CJIS Basic Certification within (3) months of hire and maintain certification while in this position.
  • Must be certified as an Evidence Specialist through the Property & Evidence Association of Florida, Inc or must obtain within first year from hire date. Must maintain certification while in this position.
