Forensic Laboratory Technician

Salary: $53,786.24 Annually

Position is responsible for providing technical support to the laboratory by the preparation of reagents; biological waste management; supply ordering and inventory control; evidence transportation; initial sexual assault kit processing, case outsourcing; and analysis request triage using the applicable computer database. The Forensic Laboratory Technician is guided in judgment by Laboratory Policy and Standard Operating Procedures. Must have the ability to make detailed notes describing the receiving and processing of evidence. Must know all tenets of applicable law and must possess the ability to work with minimal supervision. Incumbent must exercise independent judgment in the performance of their duties. Must understand overall laboratory operations and safety procedures, proper reporting of accidents, and the ability to learn new skills to accommodate changes in techniques. Duties

Position Responsibilities
  • Acts as a liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and general laboratory and administrative duties
  • Responsible for the preparation, maintenance, monitoring, and quality control of reagents and consumables for use in forensic analysis
  • Assists in maintenance and performance checks of critical instruments utilized in forensic analysis
  • Responsible for the inventorying and initial processing of sexual assault kits
  • Conducts initial case screening using applicable computer databases
  • Engages with staff in the ordering, acceptance, and transportation of evidence
  • Maintains the Biology Evidence Room
  • Responsible for equipment temperature monitoring and the disposition of biological waste
  • Maintains inventory for reagents and consumables, to include the receipt of all supplies and chemicals
  • Acts as a liaison with IMPD, Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, and other agency personnel
  • Assists in the preparation of forensic cases for outsourcing
  • Participates in validation studies as qualified
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Criminology, or related science courses, with a concentration in Biology and Chemistry.
  • Incumbent should possess the ability to learn and employ safe handling techniques for biologically contaminated evidence, practice safe chemical hygiene, and safe handling of various types of physical evidence.
  • Must have the ability to make detailed notes describing evidence received; processes used; and triaging requests for forensic analysis.
  • Incumbent shall maintain proficiency through annual proficiency testing.
  • Incumbent must be willing and capable of completing an internal/external training program determined by the Forensic Scientist Supervisor and the Quality Assurance Program, and capable of completing additional specialized training, as required or available, from Federal, State, Local agencies and other organizations.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and familiarity with the sensitive and confidential nature of evidence managing and examination.
  • Must be able to establish and set priorities according to time sensitive information in order to have continued success in this position.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in oral, verbal, and written formats.
Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, Criminology, or a related science courses, including minimum qualifications listed.
