The Police Evidence Supervisor position at the City of Tucson’s Police Department supervises the preservation of evidentiary integrity and ensures the proper chain of custody for evidence used in legal proceedings.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Police Evidence Superintendent. This position exercises supervision over the Police Evidence Technicians.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures the appropriate collection, receiving, transportation, and securing of property and evidence from various law enforcement agencies and crime scenes. Coordinates with internal/external stakeholders including vendors, department investigators, courts, and the Legal Advisor’s Office to facilitate evidence packaging, processing, storage, and disposal protocols. Supervises the collection and packaging of hazardous items from drying cabinets. Cleans and sanitizes the drying cabinets, ensuring all filtration supplies are prepped, and stocked. Maintains and orders evidence supplies, troubleshoots evidence barcode system and submits work order requests for hardware failures, technology issues, and building repairs. Manages the off-site evidence impound lot by visiting the assigned evidence personnel, viewing security footage, and by reviewing computer files within the evidence barcode computer system.
  • Supervises the process of notifying property owners of retrieval and scheduling of property pick-ups. Supervises employee interactions with community members regarding evidence retrieval and resolves grievances when a community member and the aiding employee are at an impasse. Assigns firearms background checks and verifies the results by utilizing various computer databases, collaborating with courts and relevant agencies. Analyzes data to verify legal compliance with State and Federal regulations prior to releasing firearms and interprets court orders and other legal documentation. Regulates viewings of evidence with court personnel and investigators and monitors the preparation and shipment of evidence to other agencies or individuals as needed.
  • Develops efficient workflow and storage strategies to resolve challenges, enhance team efficiency and to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, updating employee training manuals and procedures. Collaborates with the Evidence Superintendent to ensure previous personnel concerns and issues have been properly addressed and to resolve new issues. Assists in the hiring, training, mentorship, coaching, and discipline of employees. Measures employee development through periodic performance appraisals and yearly performance evaluations. Approves timecards, schedules overtime shifts and approves time off for evidence personnel.
  • Consolidates and audits evidence storage locations, personnel, and operations including the handling and submission of evidence, generates comprehensive reports of audit results, and issues officer discrepancy notices for improperly submitted property. Reviews administrative and technical documents, such as evidence case files, court documents, and disposal authorizations, to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established standards. Coordinates destruction audits, updates disposal records in collaboration with department leadership, and regularly audits high-security vaults to ensure proper storage and to promptly resolve any identified discrepancies.
  • Assesses and responds to after-hours service calls from investigative units requesting evidence personnel to respond to a crime scene. Determines appropriate level of response then contacts and informs on-call evidence personnel of scene details and notifies the alarm company of after-hours access to evidence warehouse. Coordinates and schedules staff to participate in large scale evidence viewings, processes evidence database correction forms, and resolves customer complaints.
  • Trains and evaluates new employees on the operation of evidence warehouse heavy equipment, including a pallet shrink-wrap machine, dock leveler, forklift, and person lift to ensure compliance with City of Tucson and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and regulations. Provides evidence related instruction to newly commissioned and professional staff as well as refresher and remedial training to established employees needing assistance with maintaining accuracy in evidence submission.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. Schedules ride-a-longs and facility tours for the public and members of other agencies.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Education
  • 6 months post high school
Experience
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience
Equivalency
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree and Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in law enforcement and evidence management.
