The purpose of this job is to learn the appropriate methods/procedures for investigating/processing crime scenes, which includes, but is not limited to documentation, collection, preservation, and processing of physical evidence from the scene and in a laboratory setting following scientific principles and established procedures.

Duties

Essential Job Functions:
  • Under close supervision, learns to process and document crime scenes, including, but not limited to taking photos/videos/3D scans, processing for latent prints, shoe, and tire impressions, DNA evidence, documenting bloodstains, making sketches, collecting/packaging evidence, entering data into ACISS system and other evidence collection related activities following scientific principles and established procedures.
  • Learns to prepare detailed reports after investigating/processing a crime scene or in-lab evidence processing, including sketches and FARO data.
  • Learns to process evidence in lab utilizing various cameras, light sources, equipment, chemicals, powders, and collection materials.
  • Begins to learn to analyze and compare friction ridge prints/impressions following established procedures and scientific principles.
  • Learns to complete test fires of firearms following established protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Following successful completion of training, moves to working most crime scene and lab processing cases more independently under general supervision.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of college in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or closely related field is preferred. Requires a high school diploma or GED and one year of college, vocational school, or certificate program majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or other closely related field.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
Physical Effort Required:
  • The work of this class primarily involves medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects, and involves exerting between 26 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 51 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Working Conditions:
  • This class primarily works in an indoor setting but may work outside in extreme heat and humid/wet conditions when assigned field tasks.
  • In either case, there is frequent possibility for exposure to chemicals, noxious odors, bodily fluids or other bio-hazards.
  • May work outside of standard office hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays at any time their services are needed.
  • Members will be subject to a callout schedule.
  • Work assignments also during hurricanes, evacuations, or other states of emergency.
