Duties

  • Receive, inventory, mark, maintain, and control all evidence and property, including hazardous items such as weapons, narcotics, blood and urine samples, and a wide variety of property and physical evidence.
  • Logs all property, including identifying information such as model, serial number, and crime report number.
  • Maintain logs and records of property in custody, including current status and location of property, and related records.
  • Prepare articles for the monthly auction, including determining if items have any potential value, and the preparation of an inventory list for approval by the supervisor.
  • Prepares evidence and other property for destruction, return to the owner, or auction after receipt of authorization from investigating detail or court.
  • Releases property to authorized persons in accordance with State laws and departmental procedures.
  • Transport, store, photograph, release, or destroy property as directed.
  • Maintains all records related to the above duties.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
  • Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: high school graduation or equivalent and one year of recordkeeping work experience, preferably in law enforcement or a public agency.
License and Certificates:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required at time of appointment.
