Evidence Technician - Limited Term

Salary: $21.31 - $31.97 Hourly

Under the general direction of the Lieutenant of Investigations, the Evidence Technician is responsible for providing technical support in the transfer and preservation of evidence gathered at the crime scene and delivered to the Sheriff's Office. The Evidence Technician must exercise judgment, discretion, and professional consideration to ensure that the integrity of the evidence is secured, returned or disposed of according to departmental policies and procedures.

This is a limited term position. The expected employment dates will be Fall 2025 through no later than 12/31/2026. Hours are M-F 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Chaska Justice Center. This position is eligible for FT employee benefits.

Duties

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collect, receipt, log and classify all evidence; preserve evidence related to various cases and return and/or dispose of property according to established procedures.
  • Collect, receipt and log evidence while assisting deputies on search warrants and crime scenes. Collect evidence from remote Sheriff's Office evidence storage areas to log and receipt at Sheriff's Office and transport evidence to BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension).
  • Maintain integrity of evidence by tracking with bar code software, implementing chain of custody and completing required paperwork. Ensure that all items are secure from theft, loss or contamination and that all stored evidence is properly packaged and labeled for easy retrieval according to established procedures.
  • Manage the impound lot as it pertains to forfeited vehicles and/or vehicles held for evidence. Complete required paperwork, collect any associated fees and assist the vehicle owner with the release of the vehicle.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties by entering and recording evidence items into various identification and tracking systems and records management system. File and copy documents and records, order supplies and work with the county attorney's office for evidence viewing, disclosure and prepare evidence for court.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School/GED and three (3) years of experience in a criminal justice related clerical, support or administrative position
  • -OR-
  • Associates Degree in Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice
  • -AND-
  • Valid Minnesota Driver's License or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
