Property Room Specialist (Part-Time/Limited Benefit)

Salary: $26.74 Hourly (PART-TIME)

Under the direction of the Investigative Services Captain, receives, documents, preserves, and ensures proper custody and control of physical evidence/property, prepares and packages evidence for delivery to the Michigan State Police crime lab, maintains manual and computerized records, prepares written evidence reports, and maintains property rooms.

This is a part-time, limited benefit position working approximately 20 hours a week, based out of the Fillmore Complex in West Olive. Schedule is flexible and to be determined.

Duties

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Receives, documents, stores, and ensures proper custody and control of physical evidence/ property in the custody of the department.
  • Prepares and packages DNA, narcotics and other evidence for delivery to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
  • Maintains manual and computerized records including evidence custody documents, chain of custody documents, property receipts, property control files, and related reports.
  • Prepares written evidence reports.
  • Maintain property room(s) and arrange the storage and return of evidence and/or recovered, stolen, found, or abandoned property; coordinates the proper release of evidence and property to rightful owners where appropriate.
  • Prepare unreturnable items for disposal in a manner prescribed by department policies and procedures, court orders, federal laws, and state statutes.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies, including blood alcohol analyzers, and orders stock as necessary to maintain operating levels.
  • May perform other functions as necessary.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Required Education, Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Training and/or experience in evidence collection, scene processing and criminal justice desirable.
  • Associates or Bachelor Degree preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License is required.
Additional Requirements and Information

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of crime scene evidence protocols.
  • Knowledge of procedures and protocols for collecting, preserving, and analyzing fingerprints and developing latent prints.
  • Knowledge of procedures and protocols for blood detection, enhancement, collection, and preservation.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the requirements for establishing, maintaining and documenting the chain of custody for evidence.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database management applications.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills.
  • Good interpersonal and human relations skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must have sufficient mobility to move throughout various evidence storage areas.
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 25 pounds.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in a normal office environment, in a laboratory setting, and in a variety of indoor settings. Collection, processing, and recording of crime and accident scene evidence may entail exposure to a variety of bodily fluids, blood-borne pathogens and disease agents; chemical agents and reagents; hazardous materials of unknown origin and content; and other hazards.
