Forensic Scientist - Comparative Science Section Supervisor

To serve as a civilian employee of the Indiana State Police whose primary responsibility is to be accountable for the performance of the Forensic Comparative Science Section within the context of the Laboratory’s mission.

Duties

  • Participate in the establishment of Section priorities, goals, and objectives necessary to accomplish the mission of the Laboratory.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and document performance of personnel assigned to the Section.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise the work associated with the Section.
  • Fulfill the quality assurance responsibilities of the Section as required by the Division’s Quality Assurance Program.
  • Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain laboratory services.
  • Coordinate and manage the safety and chemical hygiene programs for the Division.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities, Department personnel, and general public.
  • Develop, propose, and implement Division and Section goals and objectives.
  • Participate in the formulation of budget requests.
  • Coordinate, review, and evaluate the validation of new technical procedures.
  • Coordinate, review, and evaluate the use of appropriate controls and standards.
  • Coordinate, review, and evaluate the creation and annual review of management system documents.
  • Coordinate, review, and maintain proficiency testing documentation.
  • Monitor, review, and evaluate analytical conclusions and expert testimony of Section personnel.
  • Direct, supervise, and evaluate the performance of Section and other laboratory personnel.
  • Identify training needs, coordinate, develop and administer training programs.
  • Review and evaluate equipment and supply purchases.
  • Ensure the maintenance of appropriate resource material.
  • Coordinate, review, implement, and evaluate all of the Division’s safety and chemical hygiene measures to assure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct and/or manage safety inspections and generate the required documentation pertaining to the inspections.
  • Serve as the primary advisor in safety matters to the Division Commander.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation requirements, Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and Laboratory Division policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Job Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree or higher with natural and/or forensic science courses.
  • Training in the areas of management and leadership is desirable.
  • Five years of full time experience in a forensic science laboratory with management and/or administrative experience.
  • General knowledge of the theory and practical operation of relevant scientific instrumentation, analytical techniques and Unit Test Methods.
  • General understanding of each Unit within the Section.
  • Ability to administrate the implementation of scientific procedures.
  • Ability to manage and adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply management and leadership theories and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state safety regulations and expertise in safety and chemical hygiene matters is preferred.
  • Ability to serve as the safety officer for the Division.
  • Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Ability to attend training and meetings at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
