The position is based at the Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory and the Public Health Laboratory in Anchorage, Alaska. This role involves analyzing forensic evidence in a laboratory setting and performing case documentation and communication tasks in an office environment. The laboratory offers stunning views of the Chugach Mountains and local wildlife making it a uniquely scenic place to work. Occasional travel outside Anchorage may be required for court appearances, stakeholder training sessions, or external continuing education programs

Duties

The Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory works with the Department of Health, Public Health Laboratory to provide drug toxicology testing services to the State of Alaska. This position will support the DUI drug toxicology testing program at the Public Health Laboratory including providing expert witness impairment interpretation, reporting and testimony based on drug toxicology testing results from the Public Health Laboratory.

Additional duties include participation in method validation, review of OSAC standards, instrument maintenance, and providing training to external stakeholders.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in natural science, physical science, forensic sciences, criminalistics, or a closely related field
  • -AND-
  • The successful completion of the State of Alaska Forensic Scientist 2 flexible staffing plan for the chemistry discipline
  • -AND-
  • Two years of experience as a Forensic Scientist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
The experience and flex plan training may be earned concurrently.

Substitution:
  • One year of additional Forensic Scientist 2 experience in the chemistry discipline will substitute for the flex plan training.
Special Note:
  • Employees will be expected to successfully pass annual proficiency/competency tests.
  • Appointments to positions in the Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory are subject to background requirements per ASCLD/LAB and the Department of Public Safety.
  • A criminal background investigation, including fingerprinting, is required.
