Latent Print Examiner

The Savannah Police Department Forensics Unit is seeking two (2) Latent Print Examiners to play a critical role in processing, identifying, collecting, and comparing latent prints related to criminal investigations. In this position, you will prepare and present evidence for judicial proceedings and serve as a technical expert in court on all aspects of latent print identification.

Duties

  • Evaluates the quality of latent prints submitted and developed from a crime scene to determine if they are of sufficient value for comparison and determine if the latent print qualifies for entry into automated systems.
  • Enters data into AFIS/ULW to include the examiner utilizing their technical skills involving the manual markup of minutiae and ridge counting.
  • Retrieves and review a list of candidate images from automated systems.
  • Analyzes, compares, and identifies latent fingerprint evidence, and processes cases with known and unknown subject information.
  • Performs side-by-side comparison utilizing magnifying glasses or computer programs.
  • Makes final determination as to the identification or exclusion of a subject.
  • Establishes, verifies, or excludes identifications by examining the ridge detail in the latent prints while comparing it to the ridge detail present in the known prints.
  • Maintains chain of custody for evidence received.
  • Establishes and maintains a database of unsolved latent prints.
  • Prepares reports detailing latent print comparison findings; verify co-workers' casework and conclusions as require using ACE-V method.
  • Provides information to interdepartmental representatives and local and State law enforcement agencies.
  • Prepares court exhibits.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness in all aspects of latent print methodology and identification.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and a minimum of three years experience in latent print examinations and processing of evidence, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must possess excellent/written communication and decision-making skills and be detail oriented.
  • Possess AFIS experience.
  • Must be able to successfully pass proficiency testing prior to and periodically during employment with the agency.
  • Possess a latent print examiner certification, state equivalent LPE certification or can obtain certification based on current education and experience.
  • Current Latent Print certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI) preferred
  • IAI LPE certification is not required at the point of employment but must successfully be obtained within one year of eligibility.

  • Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
