Forensic Services Unit Clerk

Salary: $62,010.78 Annually

This position is responsible for overseeing the timely and accurate duplication and transfer of police evidence and digital multimedia in furtherance of Madison Police Department's commitment to being the national model for policing excellence.

This is a varied technical, maintenance, and general support position associated with the activities of the Police Department Forensic Services Unit. Work is primarily related to storage, duplicating, and tracking of digital multimedia evidence and the maintenance of Forensic Services Unit equipment and supplies, as assigned. Under general supervision, work is focused on procedural tasks in support of law enforcement activities.

Duties

Lab Requests
  • Fulfill and complete requests from internal and external customers
  • Locate and preserve video from various city owned and/or privately owned sources
  • Assign data/information to varied digital multimedia sources
  • Duplicate and/or export copies of digital multimedia evidence
  • Accurately document and track any and all requests completed
Evidence Handling
  • Follow rules of evidence by maintaining chain of custody and re-packaging of evidence
Lab Support
  • Triage phone calls and walk-in requests
  • Track and inventory supplies and equipment as required/assigned
  • Restock inventory according to protocols
  • Maintain and file related reports, records and other documentation
  • Maintain quality control standards and input data into specialized databases
  • Ensure crime scene equipment is in working condition
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Provide testimony in court regarding chain of custody and procedures to produce duplicates of digital multimedia evidence and records
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a technical, clerical, or digital multimedia setting.
  • -OR-
  • Associate's degree in photography, video or digital imaging, graphic design, forensic science or a related field.
Special Requirements
  • Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position. This position requires travel within the City County Building (CCB), from the lab to the Police Property Room, and from the CCB to the Dane County Courthouse.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds independently
  • Work is performed in an office setting
  • Travel and access to crime scenes may be required to deliver equipment and/or assist investigators in all types of weather conditions
