Criminalist I - DNA Database

Salary Range: $57,079.00-$59,079.00 Annually

Serve as a Class III law enforcement officer conducting DNA analysis on samples for inclusion in the DNA database. Perform the functions of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) providing law enforcement agencies information to assist in the investigation of crimes.

Duties

Specific Duties
  • Receive, evaluate, document, preserve, and analyze DNA samples in accordance with established procedures. Assist in coordinating the collection of DNA samples by local law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over offenders. Perform DNA analysis on database samples following standardized protocols, interpret analytical results, and conduct technical reviews of DNA data for submission to CODIS. Ensure full compliance with applicable accreditation and FBI Quality Assurance Standards.
  • Carry out CODIS administration duties, including specimen management, data entry, and conducting searches. Accurately confirm and resolve CODIS matches and promptly issue informational letters. Maintain and update CODIS records as needed. Ensure full compliance with National DNA Index System (NDIS) procedures.
  • Support the Forensic Rapid DNA program by assisting with validations, quality control functions, training, technical support, instrument operation, and data analysis and review.
  • Perform additional departmental responsibilities, including research, validation, quality control, quality assurance, and safety-related duties, as well as other projects essential to maintaining optimal unit efficiency. Ensure timely submission of all required administrative documentation.
  • Acquire and maintain certification as a Class III law enforcement officer. Fulfill all requirements of the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Provide expert testimony in federal, state, and local courts. Take part in pre-trial conferences and hearings and respond appropriately to requests from the court and other authorized parties. Engage in training sessions and seminars as part of continuing education requirements. Conduct training for agency personnel or external groups as needed. Disseminate information in accordance with laboratory and SLED policies and procedures.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's or the equivalent in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science-related area. Must have received at least nine (9) credit hours of coursework in biology or chemistry related areas that provide an understanding of DNA analysis and coursework covering statistics or population genetics.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret results, prepare scientific documents, communicate effectively, and testify in court.
  • Must meet all requirements to obtain certification as a Class III law enforcement officer by the State of South Carolina.
  • Must successfully complete a prescribed legal training course at SCCJA.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the underlying science of Forensic DNA analysis.
  • Ability to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing or job functions.
  • Must be able to complete duties under limited supervision.
  • Position requires periodic 24-hour call status and is subject to overnight travel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DNA analysis and CODIS is preferred.
