Duties

Specific Duties
  • Conduct inquiries of the AFIS Latent Input Workstation of fingerprint impressions and verify cases produced from the SLED Central Records Repository current work searches of the unsolved latent file.
  • Process evidence for latent prints, conduct fingerprint examinations, issue reports, and provide expert testimony in judicial proceedings.
  • Achieve competency and maintain proficiency in processing evidence for fingerprints, conducting AFIS searches, and conducting fingerprint examinations.
  • Perform duties independently and as a team member. Maintain assigned equipment in a good, working condition. Successfully complete additional assignments or duties as assigned by the department supervisor.
  • Maintain law enforcement certification and perform tasks associated with being a sworn Class III Law Enforcement Officer in South Carolina.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with completed science courses.
  • Must successfully complete a prescribed training course at the SC Criminal Justice Academy and obtain certification as a Class III Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Must be able to complete the Latent Print Department training program.
  • Must be able to effective use computer to complete and maintain case records.
  • Must be able to speak effectively in a public setting, such as judicial proceedings.
  • Position subject to on-call status and may be called in after hours on a limited basis to work priority cases.
  • Position subject to overnight travel.
  • Must be able to lift items up to 25 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience conducting fingerprint examination is preferred.
