Property Evidence Technician

Salary: $59,781.00 - $68,055.00 Annually

This civilian position processes, records, maintains, and disposes of property and evidence for the Champaign Police Department.

Duties

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • collects and maintains custody of seized property and evidence;
  • provides courtroom testimony;
  • transports evidence;
  • maintains evidence storage facilities;
  • utilizes evidence management technology to ensure proper chain-of-custody;
  • fulfills crime lab requests;
  • identifies owners for return of recovered or personal property;
  • purges disposable evidence;
  • photographs and documents evidence;
  • prepares and delivers property for auction;
  • conducts audits of property and evidence;
  • stays up-to-date with best practices and legal requirements for proper handling of property and evidence.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with a law enforcement agency performing similar duties.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience with data entry and retrieval from databases.
  • Experience writing technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working with highly confidential information.
  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including lifting up to 40 lbs. and work in environments that may contain biohazards, chemical residues, or evidence with strong odors, with or without accommodation.
  • Posses or the ability to obtain within an approved timeframe, LEADS and CJIS certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in evidence management or property room procedures.
  • Experience with evidence collection at crime scenes.
  • Experience with evidence handling.
  • Experience providing court testimony in a professional capacity.
OTHER
  • Drug screening, criminal background investigation, and ongoing random drug testing will be required. The annual starting salary range is $59,781 - $68,055, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package. Applications must be submitted online no later than Sunday, July 27, 2025.
