Forensic Technician II - Firearms

Salary: $46,000.00 Annually

Under general supervision, review and evaluate cases submitted to the Firearms Department on a daily basis. Prepare cases for examiners, maintain Firearms/Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) case assignment logs, assist firearms examiners with daily work/laboratory maintenance, and handle both internal and external destruction cases. Maintain and inventory the SLED Firearms Reference Collection. Assist the SLED National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) program with test firing, scheduling appointments, completing NIBIN lead forms, and triage, when needed. Demonstrate professionalism and willingness to work with supervisors, criminalists, support personnel, other law enforcement agencies, and the judicial system.

Duties

Specific Duties
  • Daily Operation: Identify and prepare cases for the Firearms examiners in the department. Photograph evidence, packaging, and start appropriate documentation on departmental worksheets, conduct test firing, and ensure NIBIN entry is complete. Review cases submitted to the laboratory on a daily basis and assigns them accordingly to Firearms or IBIS. Maintain the unassigned case log.
  • Backlog Case Reduction: Evaluate backlogged cases in the Firearms Department. Identify cases that still need examination and prepare them for examiners. Research cases that have been adjudicated and facilitates the return of evidence to the submitting agency.
  • Destruct Cases: Coordinate with coworkers to complete destruct cases. Conduct an inventory of these cases and complete the required paperwork and computer documentation. Coordinate annual/biannual trips to the steel mill for destruction.
  • Reference Collection: Maintain SLED Firearms Reference Collection. Conduct calls when necessary, perform yearly inventory, and maintenance of collection.
  • Other Duties: Assist examiners with case work. Maintain office supplies and assist with NIBIN Program test fire appointments, triage, or NIBIN lead forms when needed. Provide testimony in court if needed, and other duties as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • High school diploma is required and experience in a forensic laboratory is preferred. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the forensic laboratory experience.
  • Must possess knowledge of and have experience with firearms, ammunition, related terminology, tools, digital photography, computers, and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency.
  • Must be able to fire all types of firearms encountered.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Vision must be sufficient to utilize microscopes, and computer monitors for enlargement and evaluation.
  • Position requires overnight travel for training and possibly for court.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic laboratory experience or knowledge of laboratory procedures is desired.
