Duties

Example of Duties
  • Perform a variety of functions related to the receipt, filing, storage, inventory, transfer, chain of custody, transportation and disposition of all property and evidence acquired by the Anchorage Police Department.
  • Data entry of required information and utilization of a bar code reader/scanner to document property transactions.
  • Maintain chain of custody and testify in court under general supervision, analyze and make independent decisions based on department procedures, guidelines, and applicable laws.
  • Facilitate the forfeiture of property.
  • Drive vehicles, respond to crime scenes, operate a forklift, hand truck and other equipment to handle/transport hazardous materials, compressed gas cylinders, batteries, toxic chemicals, explosives, biological specimens, bio-hazards and blood borne pathogens.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
  • Access secured lockers in evidence warehouse environment and responds to scenes of active criminal investigations to retrieve evidence.
  • Ensure property and evidence is accompanied with accurate report including chain-of-custody.
  • Access, research and interpret case intake disposition forms, judicial orders, court judgments, State, juvenile and Municipal prosecution databases, police reports and other disposition records.
  • Purge disposable property following proper policies and procedures.
  • Testify in court as necessary and required.
  • Safely stand, stoop, lift, climb, crawl, and operate a forklift to locate, access, sort, stage, retrieve and safely transport property and evidence; including hazardous, toxic, regulated, materials including biological items of a strong or offensive odor.
  • Utilize Federal OSHA requirements, US Fire Codes, Federal firearm and machine gun laws, live ordnance storage requirements, federal toxic, hazardous materials and compressed gas regulations.
  • Remain current and trained on driving, forklift operation, firearms, hazardous materials, dangerous goods, proper lifting, blood borne pathogens, first aid, CPR/AED, personal protection equipment, various laws, policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or resident alien eligible for employment in the United States by date of hire.
Must possess and/or obtain
  • Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory national criminal background investigation (13 AAC 85.010, and 13 AAC 85.210) and financial review at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory psychological assessment (determines job suitability) at time of hire.Satisfactory medical/physical examination at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory physical ability test at time of hire.
  • Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • A valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
  • A forklift operator certificate within 180 days of hire.
  • A Hazmat Materials Endorsement (HME) certificate with 180 days of hire.
Preference
  • Basic Life Saving CPR Card.
  • Experience safely handling hazardous, toxic or regulated material such as biological items.
  • Applicants who possess the ability to type at a minimum net speed of 40+ WPM. [ Note: Documented typing speed ability must be attached to the application to be considered for preference. The documentation or certification must contain the applicant's name and be current within the past one (1) year. ]
Additional Important Information
  • Preference will be given to Anchorage Police Department (APD) employees. APD employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-APD applicants.
Successful applicants will be invited to test. Testing will include satisfactory passing of:
  • Nelson/Denny Comprehension Exam, I/O Solutions Integrity Inventory Exam, Oral Board, and a physical ability test.
  • Current APD Employees who have previously passed, are exempt from the Nelson Denny Comprehension Exam.
  • Applicants who have been unsuccessful in the Oral Board process within the previous two (2) years will be subject to prior results review.
  • Successful internal candidates' employment and disciplinary history will be reviewed.

Passing results of the Nelson/Denny Comprehension Exam are valid for one (1) year from the date of the test. The test scores/results may be used when applying for other positions within APD.

Appointment to this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory passing an extensive background and financial check, a written psychological assessment and interview to determine job suitability, a pre-employment medical physical exam, and a drug screen.
