Property & Evidence Technician

Northfield Police Department, Northfield, Minnesota

Salary: $31.40 - $40.01 per hour

With general supervision performs a variety of routine clerical, professional and technical administrative and field work involving the detection, collection, preservation, receipt, storage, and release of property and evidence in accordance with State law as a non-sworn (civilian) police employee.

Duties

  • Receive, document, process, and store evidence and property
  • Maintain strict chain-of-custody and legal integrity for court use
  • Transport evidence for forensic testing; respond to subpoenas and testify in court
  • Assist officers and investigators with evidence tracking and crime scene support
  • Perform crime scene documentation, photography, and evidence analysis
  • Manage firearms returns, forfeitures, and ATF tracing
  • Handle requests from attorneys, courts, and other agencies using digital evidence systems
  • Administer facility access systems and assist with building security video exports

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree plus 2–3 years of relevant administrative experience, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates equivalent skills
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License
  • Strong computer proficiency and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field
  • Current or previous work in a law enforcement environment
  • Certification as an Evidence Custodian or Crime Scene Technician
  • Experience with CJIS systems and/or other evidence/property room operations
