Criminalist I - Computer Crimes

Salary: $59,079.00 Annually

Serve as a Criminalist in SLED's Computer Crimes Unit. Perform forensics examinations and conduct analysis of seized electronic devices. Prepare reports and evidentiary findings as an expert in judicial proceedings. Represent SLED and the Computer Crimes Unit in a professional manner at all times.

Duties

  • Conduct forensic examinations of seized electronic devices on scene or in a laboratory, and obtain/document supporting information relating to violations of state or federal law.
  • Prepare examination reports that accurately depicts the findings of electronic devices submitted.
  • Provide expert testimony in the courtroom given the evidentiary findings.
  • Perform various support tasks related to training, communication, special assignments, and other functional areas of responsibility. Attend professional training sessions to maintain expertise in the area of digital forensics.
  • Carry out administrative duties as required; maintain up-to-date case information records in case management system and conduct periodic evidence inventory inspections to ensure evidence is being properly maintained as required by SLED policy.
  • Support federal, state, and local law enforcement functions by processing, examining, and interpreting evidence.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Proficient use of technology and personal computers utilizing Microsoft Office Software.
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive analysis of all types of forensic examinations and provide written reports or testimony in court, is required.
  • Must reside within a 30 mile radius of the assigned work station (4700 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC)
  • Must have the ability to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Adhere to working schedule; primary work is consists of working in a laboratory Monday-Friday, with some offsite work. This position is subject to be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week as designated.
  • Must be able to lift items of evidence up to 40 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in performing forensic examinations of electronic devices, conducting analysis, reports, and testifying in court.
