The Montana Forensic Science Division is seeking a skilled DNA Analyst to join our Biology Section—where science meets public service. As a DNA Analyst, you’ll work in a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory, examining biological evidence collected from crime scenes involving homicides, sexual assaults, suicides, burglaries, and more. You’ll apply cutting-edge techniques to identify biological fluids, develop DNA profiles, interpret complex data, and prepare clear and thorough reports of your findings.

Your work will directly support law enforcement and the judicial system by providing scientifically-sound, objective, and reliable forensic DNA analysis.

Duties

  • Examine evidentiary materials for biological fluids and perform DNA extractions and profiling.
  • Interpret complex DNA results, including mixtures and low-level samples, using STRMix probabilistic genotyping software.
  • Prepare accurate and comprehensive written reports suitable for use in criminal investigations and court proceedings.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, attorneys, and other forensic professionals.
  • Maintain strict chain-of-custody documentation and adhere to laboratory quality assurance standards.
  • Testify as an expert witness when needed.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, or natural science.
  • At least 9 credit hours of coursework in biology or chemistry relevant to forensic DNA analysis.
  • Coursework in statistics and/or population genetics as required by FBI Quality Assurance Standards.
  • Job-related laboratory experience.
Preferred Experience
  • 2+ years working in an accredited forensic laboratory.
  • 1+ year of direct experience in forensic DNA casework.
  • Experience with:
  • Y-STR analysis
  • STRmix or similar probabilistic genotyping tools
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Validation of forensic methods and instrumentation
Knowledge of:
  • Forensic DNA analysis, serological testing, and analytical chemistry
  • Chain-of-custody, evidence handling, and courtroom procedures
  • Quality assurance protocols (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) and NDIS requirements
Skills in:
  • Use of laboratory instruments including microscopes, imaging systems, robotic platforms, and analytical software
  • Reagent preparation and quality control
Ability to:
  • Communicate clearly and professionally—both in writing and orally
  • Balance multiple case assignments and work under deadlines
  • Collaborate effectively within a team
  • Adapt to a high-pressure environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
Physical & Environmental Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Work with potentially hazardous biological materials
  • Strict adherence to laboratory safety and DOJ security protocols
