Duties

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sterility in the laboratory to include glassware, materials and equipment.
  • Orders equipment and supplies.
  • Assembles, displays, and assists in laboratory instruction, to include laboratory tours.
  • Conducts inventory of equipment, chemicals, and evidence.
  • Transport equipment, supplies, and records.
  • Conducts routine safety inspections and provides assistance with other laboratory accreditation requirements.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory library and reference files.
  • Performs recordkeeping and other related clerical duties as assigned.
  • Assists laboratory personnel in the identification and/or comparison of evidence.
  • Performs other technical duties as assigned.
  • Documents, prepares, labels, and performs quality checks on reagent preparations relating to chemical testing.
  • Assists with the maintenance of shared unit evidence storage areas.
  • Sterilizes and prepares unit testing and storage equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares solutions for and general chemical analysis; prepares bulk solutions.
  • Handles and properly disposes of biohazardous, radioactive, and pathogenic substances according to established regulatory practices and procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance of specialized unit equipment, to include calibration and sterilization procedures.
  • Assists in the preparation of samples for in-house proficiency testing.
  • Maintains and monitors critical systems such as temperature monitoring and card access.
  • May receive, catalog and input data into Individual Characteristic Database Systems.
  • Performs related work as directed.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or closely related science; additional course work may be necessary; see discipline related special requirements below.
  • A minimum of six (6) months prior experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Such must be clearly demonstrated on the application for consideration.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Depending on functional area of assignment must have major coursework to include:
  • Forensic Biology/DNA - Successful completion of coursework in General Biology and General Chemistry.
  • Controlled Substances/Forensic Chemistry - Successful completion of coursework in General Chemistry.
  • Firearms and Tool Mark Examination - Successful completion of coursework in General Chemistry.
  • Latent Print Examination - Successful completion of coursework in General Biology and General Chemistry.
Recruitment Information
  • Applicants who qualify will be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include, but not be limited to evaluation of training and experience; written test; computer based test; interview; polygraph examination; psychological evaluation; employment record, fingerprint and background check; medical examination; and drug screen.
