The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a skilled Forensic Pathologist to lead and coordinate forensic pathology activities. Duties

  • Lead Forensic Investigations: Set standards for forensic autopsies and ensure a secure chain of custody.
  • Perform Autopsies & Determine Cause of Death: Conduct detailed forensic autopsies and external examinations to uncover crucial evidence.
  • Oversee Crime Scene Investigations: Direct forensic scene examinations, ensuring accurate evidence collection, preservation, and reconstruction.
  • Document & Report Findings: Prepare comprehensive forensic reports and collaborate with law enforcement and judicial teams.
  • Testify as an Expert Witness: Present findings in court to support criminal and civil cases.
  • Train & Guide Law Enforcement: Provide expert training on forensic evidence collection and death investigations.
  • Supervise & Consult: Oversee Coroner Forensic Technicians, contract forensic pathologists, and advise law enforcement, the District Attorney, and Public Health officials.
  • Emergency Response: Serve as a key forensic resource in times of crisis.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Experience working as a licensed physician in the field of Forensic Pathology.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Physician and Surgeon’s License issued by the State of California.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid certificate in anatomic and forensic pathology issued by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License or the incumbent must provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority.
  • Successfully pass a complete background investigation.
