Duties

Investigate, Identify, collect and examine evidence from major crimes scenes involving homicides, suspicious deaths, violent crimes, and deadly force involving Department personnel.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, management sciences, or criminal justice or related field; -AND-
  • Five (5) years of forensics or crime scene processing/management experience.
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass Drug Test, Criminal Records check and Background check.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Must successfully complete the Crime Scene Specialist (CSS) Training program and the CSS OJT program.
  • One (1) year probationary period is required for this position.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Basic operations, services, and activities of a crime scene investigation program
  • Principles and practices of arrest evidence laws and regulations
  • Methods and techniques of crime scene investigations
  • Methods and technical procedures of gathering and preserving physical evidence
  • Methods and techniques of crime scene processing, documentation, and evidence collection
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Regulations relating to the custody and handling of property and evidence
  • Specialized tools used for evidence analysis.
  • Basic photography techniques
  • Methods and techniques of forensic biometrics
  • Process and procedures in providing expert testimony in court.
  • Police procedures in criminal crime scene investigations and crime scene protection
  • Methods and techniques of identifying criminal trends and patterns through criminal behavior.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, ordinances, codes and regulation
Preferred Skills & Abilities
  • Operate and use equipment common to crime scene investigations
  • Interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws, codes and regulations
  • Prepare detailed and comprehensive reports
  • Identify, collect and examine physical and digital evidence using appropriate analytical techniques and methods
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Testify in a public court as required
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external agency customers and personnel
  • Perform the essential duties of the job with or without reasonable accommodations
