A Forensic Scientist 4 (Technical Lead) in the DNA discipline within the Tacoma Crime Laboratory directly impacts the mission of the CLD by performing independent, timely and accurate analyses of routine and complex casework, writing opinion reports, testifying to conclusions in courts of law, and providing training to criminal justice agencies. Technical Lead positions are a vital part of the quality assurance program. The Technical Lead position provide quality assurance program support through technical oversight and leadership in the DNA discipline.

An employee in this position interacts with various staff to include but not limited to: forensic scientists, supervisors, laboratory management, administrative staff, representatives of criminal justice agencies, and the general public. Work priorities are established through interactions with management, criminal justice agencies, prosecutors, and the capabilities and workload of the scientist.

Duties

  • Scientifically analyzes evidence in routine, and non-routine and complex casework in an area(s) in which they have been authorized and are proficient and productive.
  • Formulates sound conclusions from data without exceeding the boundaries of the data. Data may result from complex analyses involving multiple methods and techniques, multiple items and examinations.
  • Reports scientific findings in the form of a written forensic laboratory report based on the interpretation of observations and analytical test results.
  • Documents and protects evidence in accordance with current laboratory procedures, ensuring that the chain of custody is maintained.
  • Testify in a court of law presenting findings to a jury in a manner that is designed to be readily understood.
  • Maintaining competency in casework analysis.
  • Respond to discovery requests, providing all appropriate material in a timely manner.
  • Follow the standards of accreditation (ANAB), laboratory and agency policies.
  • Participates in the proficiency testing program by successfully completing all assigned proficiencies and competencies.
  • Assures that all assigned instruments have undergone the appropriate performance checks and maintenance.
  • Works with the Standards and Accountability Section in the performance of their assigned quality assurance duties.
  • Accountable for validation of new technology and methods, and investigation of assigned casework nonconformances.
  • Assists supervisors with resolving disagreements between case analysts and technical reviewers, resolving other technical issues, and assists Standards and Accountability with root cause analysis involving technical nonconformities.
  • Responsibility to recommend the termination of testing in their discipline in the event of a technical problem with a technical procedure, instrumentation or equipment.
  • Assists with the oversight of standard training for new employees, and re-training of existing employees as needed in conjunction with the employee’s supervisor, within the discipline.
  • Assists in coordination, content, and execution of the Functional Area Meetings to include setting up training workshops in conjunction with the FAM.
Work Setting/ Hazards
  • The setting is a forensic laboratory where chemical and biological hazards, drugs, firearms, and other hazards may be present.
  • Must be willing and able to work on cases involving traumatic events.
Schedule
  • 40-hour work week, generally 5 days per week Monday through Friday. Hours may be flexible upon approval of the laboratory manager. Laboratory business hours are determined locally and are generally 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
Travel Requirements
  • Some travel within and outside the state will be required for court testimony and attendance at meetings and training events.
Tools and Equipment
Must maintain proficiency with computers, relevant software, and standard office equipment. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of scientific instruments and equipment utilized by the DNA unit, such as, but not limited to:
  • Thermal Cyclers,
  • Capillary Electrophoresis,
  • Genetic Analyzers,
  • Real-Time PCR DNA Quantitation systems,
  • Stereo binocular Microscopes,
  • Phase Contrast Microscopes,
  • and centrifuges.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate or an advanced degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or forensic science from an accredited institution.
  • Coursework in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology (9 semester hours or 14 quarters hours combined).
  • Coursework in statistics or population genetics.
  • Five years of technical experience in a forensic laboratory performing analysis of physical evidence, which includes testifying as an expert witness in courts of law.
  • Must be willing and able to work on cases involving traumatic events.
Conditions of Employment
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
