About the Office of the Medical Examiner
Join a team dedicated to providing reliable and trustworthy medicolegal death investigations in our community! The Office of the Medical Examiner is a county agency charged under Arizona law to perform medical investigations of certain types of deaths. The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause (disease and/or injury) of the death to help improve public health and safety. We are looking for service-minded individuals to join our collaborative team to help the people of Maricopa County.

Duties

Job Contributions
  • Assist the forensic pathologist during autopsy using surgical techniques to perform evisceration, removal, and weighing of organs, and closing
  • Take, develop, and ensure appropriate quality radiographs for examinations
  • Inventory and record clothing, personal effects, and valuables
  • Collect, preserve, label, and record tissue samples and specimens for toxicology, histology, microbiology, and anthropology
  • Collect, label, record, and secure evidentiary materials, such as trace evidence, ammunition, and other objects
  • Collect, label, record, and secure drugs, substances, and paraphernalia
  • Maintain, clean, and sanitize examination tables, stations, and instruments to ensure working order and request maintenance as necessary
  • Measure and record the weights of internal organs as they are removed
  • Document exam-related information into the case management system
  • Transport decedents to and from the body storage cooler using pallet jack and proper lifting mechanics
  • Assist with taking photographs and fingerprinting decedents during autopsy
  • Stock examination suites with required PPE, instruments, and supplies

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

We Require
  • One year of experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • An associate’s degree or completion of 60-semester units from an accredited college or university in Forensic Science, Biological Sciences, Mortuary Science, or other related field, which includes completed courses in anatomy and physiology and medical terminology
Other Requirements
  • Successful candidate will be required to complete a post-job offer medical evaluation in order to use N95 respirators
We Value
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Forensic Science, Biological Science, Mortuary Science, or a related field, which includes completed courses in anatomy/physiology and medical terminology
  • Two years of experience working directly with decedents and/or patients in a medical environment
  • Experience assisting with postmortem examinations
  • Experience working or volunteering in a medical examiner/coroner’s office
  • Experience working with decedents
  • Paramedic, emergency medical or surgical training
Working Conditions
  • Sufficient strength and physical and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 100 lbs
  • Ability to work with decedents in a decomposed state and work in malodorous conditions
  • Weekend hours may be required based on a selected schedule
  • Full-time or part-time opportunity
