Duties

  • Coordinate the processing of firearms and firearm components in support of the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) process.
  • Perform physical inspections of various firearms to collect data for verification, testing, and tracking.
  • Test fire various firearms to collect physical evidence for data analysis.
  • Support and enter information into the eTrace database.
  • Conduct and support eTrace investigations for firearm ownership.
  • Work with the CGIC team and support the cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
  • Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice; -AND-
  • Three (3) years of experience in maintaining records and performing data entry.
  • Experience in a scientific laboratory preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
  • Successful completion of the APD Firearms Safety Course within six (6) months from date of hire.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Basic operations, services and activities of a forensic laboratory program
  • Basic operational characteristics of equipment and tools
  • Basic scientific laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Basic operations, services and activities of a records management system
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • General firearms knowledge and firearms safety
  • Copperfire and Tiburon software
Preferred Skills & Abilities
  • Operate a variety of forensic equipment and instruments in a safe and effective manner
  • Interpret and explain department policies and procedures
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from department Personnel
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the information received
  • Operate a variety of office equipment
  • Maintain and update a variety of records and logs
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Perform the essential functions on the job with or without reasonable accommodation
