Evidence Technician (Part-Time)

Under general supervision of the Chief of Police, responsible for processing of major crime scenes, as well as maintaining the integrity of evidence. The purpose of this position is to collect and process evidence related to crimes. The position is responsible for collecting, processing, safeguarding, and presenting evidence, preparing reports, and administrative duties. The position will work under general supervision to perform work as outlined; develop work methods and sequences. This position provides 24-hour service to the community by rotating schedules, which includes working weekends, holidays, and overtime when required by operational necessity.

This is a part time (29 hours per week, no benefits) grant funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon continuation of grant funding.

Duties

  • Collects evidence at crime scenes or related areas using technical processes to find,collect, store, catalog, and transport.
  • Prepare representations of crime scenes or related areas using still or motion video, sketches, notes or other processes.
  • Performs crime scene photography, including film development and the operation of various pieces of camera equipment.
  • Process, classify, and safeguards evidence using laboratory or other physical process to determine characteristics or other information concerning evidence.
  • Prepares evidence information for use, presents to others, and testifies about evidence in court.
  • Performs related duties such as fingerprinting, maintaining chemicals, supplies, and technical equipment.
  • Perform administrative functions such as recording statistical information, compiling reports, performing specialized studies, coordinating with other agencies or the public, and maintaining logs and forms.
  • Trains others on evidence collecting and processing procedures.
  • Attend case or staff meetings to exchange information.
  • Attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
  • Prepares proposed budgets to cover the operation of Crime Scene services annual budget year.
  • Photographs and fingerprints person arrested and held for various crimes and law violations.
  • Assists upon request other area of law enforcement agencies by searching for latent fingerprints, taking photographs at crime scenes, and collecting evidence.
  • Performs related work as required including but not limited to the identification and collection of physical evidence.
  • Collects and preserves evidence at crime scenes.
  • Processes evidence and assists with other assigned efforts.
  • Collects, photographs, preserves, classifies, fingerprints, palm prints, and other types of body prints.
  • Tags, marks, packages, documents, accepts, and stores property and evidence received.
  • Maintains an accurate accounting of all items found or recovered for storage.
  • Provides secure storage, safe handling, and proper control of property.
  • Maintain records indicating chain of custody.
  • Establish a system to maintain the integrity of evidence.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information learned.
  • Sets up and operates portable lighting equipment.
  • Works near deceased bodies in various stages of putrefaction to recover and record evidence.
  • Gives court testimony when required.
  • Performs routine clerical and administrative work requiring considerable discretion.
  • Receives the public professionally and answers questions; responds to inquiries regarding department requirements, regulations, and procedures and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons.
  • Uses all required safety and protective equipment.
  • Subject to call-out as needed during non-working hours.
  • Must be able to successfully complete classroom training, field training, and other instruction designed to prepare the apprentice for assuming the duties and responsibilities of an Identification Technician.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college in forensic science or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated responsible experience required.
  • Valid Texas Drivers’ License Class C and satisfactory driving record required.
  • Prior law enforcement environment work experience highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations pertaining to collection of evidence and return of property.
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to rules of evidence.
  • Knowledge of inventories.
  • Ability to organize property/evidence items and inventory in a comprehensive manner.
  • Ability to use safe and secure practices in the handling and storage of firearms, weapons, narcotics, drugs, money, and dangerous devices.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer, general office equipment and 10-key calculator.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office programs; knowledge of computer operations including spreadsheet formulation.
  • Ability to interpret oral and written instructions and refers deviations, problems, or unfamiliar situations to supervisor for proper decisions and guidance.
  • Ability to write reports, memos, schedules, and general correspondence.
  • Ability to maintain legible, complete, and accurate records.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard techniques of criminal identification and fingerprint classification methods, practices, records, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of photography and photographic processing methods and equipment; criminal identification methods and procedures.
  • Skill in the use and care of materials and equipment employed in police identification work.
  • Ability to maintain cross-indexed filing systems and to classify documentary materials for filing purposes.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in courteously and effectively working with the public.
  • Ability to manage daily workloads and meet deadlines to maintain efficiency within the department.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Skilled in safety regulations, work practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions.
