Property/Evidence Specialist

Salary: $40,312.00 Annually

Under the general supervision of the Property Evidence Supervisor, performs varied, complex clerical work. This position involves the storing, maintaining, and disposing of property/evidence when authorized while maintaining accountability of property stored with this agency. This position involves the preservation, documentation and preparation of evidence that includes items that are biologically and chemically contaminated on a daily basis. These materials may have carcinogenic or health damaging properties. Work is performed with limited supervision and requires that duties be accomplished with a degree of independence and at a level of responsibility exercising good judgment and initiative in the performance of assigned duties. The employee may be subject to call-out during off-duty hours as necessary. Performs other related work as requested.

Duties

  • Receives daily evidence submissions, ensures proper packaging and paperwork, and enters information in PETS.
  • Conducts regular destruction of property and evidence pursuant to disposition, Court Order or Florida State Statute.
  • Prepares evidence and laboratory forms for submission to the crime laboratory for examination as required.
  • Scans all necessary documents to cases in ACISS.
  • Conducts bin inventories, consolidations and relocations as needed.
  • Emails correspondence with deputies, other units in Sheriff’s Office as well as outside entities.
  • Retrieves and releases items needed for investigation, processing, and copying.
  • Conducts drug destruction on regular basis per Court Order.
  • Conducts gun destruction on regular basis per Court Order.
  • Sets/holds appointments to return property to owners upon receipt of proper authorization.
  • Assists with the annual inventory.
  • Sends letters to owners for released property and evidence.
  • Conducts criminal history checks as needed.
  • Assists with property/ evidence submissions as needed.
  • Research for possible Found Property owners.
  • Sets/ holds appointments for the State and/ or Defense to review evidence.
  • Releases property/ evidence to other agencies or entities per Disposition.
  • Maintains D1 and D2 Lobby drug collection boxes.
  • Seal and Expunge Property/ Evidence records per Court Order.
  • Stands by during search warrants or evidence processing in secured evidence areas.
  • Testifies in court, gives depositions, and assists other agencies as necessary.
  • Acts on behalf of the Property/ Evidence Supervisor during his/ her absence.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Training and Experience
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent supplemented by two years of responsible clerical experience, law enforcement related field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately without constant supervision
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic
  • Ability to handle confidential matters without compromising confidentiality
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as scanner, copy machine and computer terminal
  • Ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures as related to the operation of the Property/Evidence Unit
Essential Physical Skills
  • Ability to communicate orally
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk unassisted
  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Ability to carry moderate weight items up to and including 50 pounds
