Salary: $21.37 - $24.08 Hourly

he City of Brookhaven, located in metro Atlanta, is seeking highly qualified applicants for Crime Scene Technician in the Police Department. The successful candidate must possess exceptional skills in analyzing crime scenes, evaluating, collecting and processing crucial evidence.

Under the general direction of the investigative services division Lieutenant, this position is responsible for complex crime scene investigations; responsibility for the evaluation of the scene; uses various types of equipment; develops, secures, and packages physical evidence for scientific evaluation and comparison; prepares detailed reports on the observations and activities at the scene for the detectives; testifies in court regarding the findings and processing methods used at the scene.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Processes major crime scenes and other crime scenes as requested.
  • Collects evidence to include physical, trace and latent fingerprints.
  • Photographs and prepares diagrams of crime scenes and accident scenes to collect, preserve and document evidence.
  • Records crime scenes and accident scenes to preserve and document evidence.
  • Prepares a variety of reports of all crime scene procedures.
  • Processes evidence for latent prints by examining item, chemically treating item, photographing latent prints and preparing a report.
  • Submits latent prints to AFIS.
  • Maintains files of latent prints recovered.
  • Performs comparison of latent prints to known prints.
  • Maintains forensic lab equipment.
  • Prepares various reports and presentations for court.
  • Attends autopsies to photograph and document injuries to collect, preserve and document evidence as needed.
  • Testifies in court about evidence processed and collected.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • High School graduate or GED;
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience as a crime scene technician in a police environment;
  • Or equivalent education, and/or experience;
  • Certified as a Crime Scene Technician; and
  • Must possess a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of standard policies, procedures, programs and services in an office setting.
  • Knowledge of state laws, practices and procedures relating to municipal police departments and the handling of evidence.
  • Knowledge of photographic and identification techniques used in law enforcement; fingerprint collection; and computer use and techniques. An understanding of trace evidence and blood, bodily fluid, and DNA collection techniques.
  • Ability to pass the Georgia Crime Information Center certification test.
  • Ability to learn court procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive material.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, equipment, methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and computer software applications.
  • Skill in managing competing priorities on multiple projects and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Skill in operation of issued equipment and motor vehicle.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with employees and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, state and federal authorities, civic leaders and the public.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
