To serve as a professional staff employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the laboratory’s responsibilities in routine forensic microanalysis examinations with associated court presentations.

Duties

Job Duties
  • Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain analytical service.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic microanalysis.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities.
  • Satisfactory completion in an ISP recognized forensic microanalysis training/testing program.
  • Upon completion of relevant training, conduct forensic analysis of routine trace evidence materials utilizing approved Unit Test Methods.
  • Work under the direction of a higher-level forensic scientist or supervisor including the review of records.
  • Demonstrate communication skills and forensic science knowledge.
  • Participate in a proficiency testing program.
  • Qualify to testify in court as an expert in forensic microanalysis.
  • Communicate analytical procedures, methodology, policies, and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs in analysis of trace evidence.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and Laboratory policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Job Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree or higher in natural science and/or forensic science, which shall include a minimum of one semester of physics and one year or equivalent in each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry/instrumental methods, including lecture and associated laboratory classes.
  • Knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Unit Test Methods.
  • Ability to comprehend, demonstrate, and explain knowledge of the theory and practical operation of various scientific instruments and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to effectively operate various computer systems and software.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
