The Crime Scene Analyst is responsible for processing, investigating, and reconstructing events at crime scenes, including the documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence. Work involves scene and laboratory examination of physical evidence, frequent interactions with investigators, providing a variety of reports, preparing court exhibits, and providing expert testimony. Responsible for instructing and facilitating training of law enforcement personnel and community groups in crime scene and forensic related work.

Duties

Description:
  • Responds to and processes crime scenes including photo, video, and sketch documentation of the crime scene; search and identification of evidence; collection and preservation of evidence; use of specialized forensic techniques on scene which may include latent print processing, biological and chemical testing, trace evidence collection, 3D imaging, trajectory evaluation, bloodstain analysis, tire and footwear analysis, and crime scene reconstruction.
  • Conducts ancillary duties to crime scene response, which may involve persons processing, to include attending autopsies, processing vehicles, responding to hospitals, vehicle impounds, and the jail for evidence collection, and further laboratory examination of evidence.
  • Works with digital media to complete photo, video, and mobile device requests including Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) digital archive maintenance, video recovery, mobile device data extraction, photographic prints, CD's, DVD's, and other specialized photo requests.
  • Generates written technical reports of all examinations and analyses performed and conducts technical reviews of reports written by other members of the crime scene unit.
  • Meets with court personnel, providing expert testimony and presentation in legal proceedings. Ensure that all required court information is available. Obtain out-of-state court case information, as necessary.
  • Participates in the maintenance of all areas, vehicles, equipment, supplies and policies associated with the crime scene unit.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities for the individual and the crime scene until, which may include frequent in-house training, attending training, conferences, and seminars, professional memberships, certifications, and accreditation, and the research and development of new crime scene techniques.
  • Trains JCSO personnel, other agency personnel and academy personnel in all areas of crime scene processing and evidence examination. Participates in community education when possible.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

  • Associate's Degree
Experience:
  • Work Experience: Minimum one year
Other
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours. Will be on a rotational on-call schedule with other Crime Scene Analysts in the unit.
  • May be required to work overtime, and on occasion, may be asked to respond to investigations while off duty and not on-call.
  • Work involves all types of working conditions and there is potential for exposure to a multitude of hazards.
  • Must complete the JCSO Crime Scene Unit training program and demonstrate competency in the required knowledge, skills and abilities within 1 year of date of hire. A modified training program may be substituted based on the individual’s experience and demonstration of competency. Must maintain proficiency through annual evaluation.
Preferred
  • Active certification in crime scene or other forensic discipline through a recognized forensic organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree with crime scene and science related courses.
  • 3 years of experience in forensic laboratory and/or crime scene experience.
  • Formal training in crime scene processing, student instruction, and digital evidence to include cell phone extraction and analysis.
