Evidence Technician

Salary: $32,291 per year

Responsible for receiving, processing and preserving crime scene evidence and property in accordance to Federal and state guidelines, and established protocol of the San Angelo Police Department.

Duties

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs a variety of tasks associated with the receipt, storage, tracking and safekeeping of crime scene evidence and property according to Federal regulations and rules of criminal procedure.
  • Documents all handling of evidence and property from intake through final disposition, and maintains chain of custody, as well as entering that data into computer systems and case files.
  • Conducts regular inventory of evidence room and property; organizes and maintains order in the property and evidence storage rooms.
  • Handle requests from the public regarding return of personal property and evidence.
  • Research cases to track statute of limitations and legal time frames, and checks for compliance to those regulations.
  • Generates special and periodic reports.
  • Primary hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; occasionally called in to store or retrieve evidence during off hours. On call weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Education and Experience:
  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration, or a related field; and two year's bookkeeping experience, preferably in a law enforcement agency; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Typing test of 35 wpm with 90% accuracy is required. (If opened to Police Department employees only OR COSA employees only- the typing test will be waived.)
  • Upon being hired, will receive and be required to maintain certification from, Texas Association of Property and Evidence Inventory Technicians (T.A.P.E.I.T.).
  • A valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record is required.
  • Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
Required Knowledge of:
  • Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
Required Skill in:
  • Record keeping and retrieval.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic data entry and bookkeeping skills.
Additional Information:
  • May be called to testify in civil or criminal court proceedings regarding evidence collected at crime scenes.
  • This is a security sensitive position.
  • Candidates will be subject to an extensive background investigation which includes credit history and polygraph exam.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical work, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
