Duties

Kind of Work
  • Lead level professional, technical and administrative work in the forensic examinations of firearms, ammunition components, toolmarks, serial number restoration, gunshot residue, bullet trajectories, and other closely-related physical evidence.
  • Work includes examining and testing of recovered firearms, spent bullet casings, items with gunshot residue and related evidence using forensic methods of analysis to identify and substantiate proof of matched identification links as part of criminal investigations.
  • Work also includes testifying in court as an expert witness and related work as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Four (4) years of full-time experience in an accredited crime laboratory conducting Firearm and Toolmark examinations and analysis.
  • Completion of a related certification or equivalent e.g., AFTE (Firearms Evidence Examination and Identification) or the National Firearms Examiner Academy (NFEA/ATF).* OR documented release to conduct independent case work from an ANAB accredited laboratory for Firearms and Toolmarks: Physical Comparison for Ammunition and Qualitative Determination for Ammunition and Firearms.
  • NOTE: An additional four (4) years of experience conducting Firearm and Toolmark examinations and analysis in an accredited crime lab as a commissioned police officer may be substituted for the Bachelor's Degree.
