Crime Scene and Evidence Technician

Salary: $47,484.00 Annually

Under general supervision, this position is a multi-faceted position that provides assistance to the Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division with the location, identification, collection, recording, and preservation of physical evidence found at crime scenes. The technician maintains, catalogs, and preserves all evidence and found property that comes into the possession of the Police Department. The technician is on call and subject to extended and unusual working hours to include holidays, weekends, nights, and must be able to testify in court proceedings. Duties

  • Packages, preserves, and catalogs all evidence brought into the police department; conducts laboratory examinations of physical evidence.
  • Photographs, processes, collects, and packages physical evidence at crime scene.
  • Communicates with investigative or other law enforcement personnel regarding the collection, storage, and process of evidentiary items.
  • Transports evident to the forensic laboratory or other required agencies.
  • Maintains and disposes of evidence or property as required by Alabama law and the Foley Police Department Policies and Procedures; Attempts to identify and contact owners of lost or abandoned property submitted by officers, citizens, or detectives.
  • Ensures chain of custody is preserved on all items of evidentiary value.
  • Secures evidence vault and monitors for unauthorized access.
  • Conducts annual inventory of items preserved and stored within the evidence vault.
  • Ensures evidence supplies are stocked and available for department personnel.
  • Performs data entry functions by keying data into computer systems; Enters, retrieves, reviews or modifies data in databases; Verifies accuracy of entered data and corrects as needed; Completes reports.
  • Performs reception functions including answering phone calls, record/relay messages, return calls as necessary, greeting and directing visitors to appropriate personnel.
  • Testifies in court proceedings.
  • Utilizes a variety of equipment including vehicles, firearms, radios, computers, complex camera systems, technical crime scene processing equipment, and various safety equipment.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Successful applicant must pass a psychological examination, drug test, a full driving and criminal background check, and polygraph examination.
