The Forensic Services Division of the City of Durham Police Department is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as a non-sworn Crime Scene Investigator. The Forensic Services Division is a premier crime scene and forensic investigative unit offering crime scene, crime lab, and property & evidence services to the residents of the City of Durham. The Forensic Services Division is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Duties

  • Successfully complete the CSI Training program.
  • Responds to requests for crime scene processing and analysis; identifies, collects, and preserves evidence; documents evidence through video, photography, sketching, measurements, and 3D scanning; processes physical evidence using various chemicals/processes and laser techniques; maintains chain of custody of evidence.
  • Further analyze items of evidence in the lab, package evidence items, enter items into the Report Management System, and turn items in to Property & Evidence.
  • Prepares reports, case files, records, and other documents; updates and maintains data bases; reviews work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares charts, graphs, or exhibits for investigation or court presentation.
  • Complete evidence reviews with Investigators and attorneys.
  • Provides expert testimony in local, state, and federal court.
  • Attend continuing education classes to maintain current knowledge of applicable procedures and processes.
  • Attend community events and provide presentations to the public as directed.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in forensics, biology, chemistry, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Two years of related experience in crime scene investigation, forensics, or related criminal justice work.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
