The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator's Office invites applications for the position of Property and Evidence Technician I. Incumbents are responsible for intake and booking of evidence, tracking chain of custody, collecting abandoned or seized property, releasing property and evidence materials in accordance with legal regulations, and coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials.

Duties

  • Receives and books evidence; verifies evidence is properly identified and safely packaged.
  • Transports property and evidence to on-site and off-site storage.
  • Maintains records and files for all property and evidence materials.
  • Documents chain of custody actions for all property and evidence materials.
  • Performs property and evidence disposition functions for claimed property, court evidence, and unclaimed and hazardous materials.
  • Reviews evidence records and court records to identify property and evidence that is ready for disposition. Attempts to locate owners of property and evidence that is approved for disposition.
  • Coordinates the disposal of unclaimed property, including materials requiring special disposal such as narcotics, weapons, and hazardous materials.
  • May train law enforcement personnel on the packaging and labeling of evidence.
  • May oversee the work of student interns.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below:
OPTION 1:
  • Education: Completion of thirty (30) semester units of coursework that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.
  • Experience: One (1) year of full-time, paid experience performing receipt, storage, release, inventory, and recordkeeping of stored material.
OPTION 2:
  • Experience: One (1) year as a Crime Scene Specialist with the County of Fresno.
OPTION 3:
  • Experience: Two (2) years as an Identification Technician with the County of Fresno.
In addition to the options listed above, the following may also be required:
  • License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
  • Note: Incumbents must obtain and maintain Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Justice (DOJ) clearance as a condition of employment.

  • Understand, interpret, and apply department policies, rules, regulations and procedures;

  • Check and confirm details repeatedly and accurately;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Work independently and in a team environment;
  • Operate a personal computer, multi-line telephone system, and other office machines;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with other agencies and the public;
  • Effectively and independently manage multiple work assignments, set priorities and meet established deadlines;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of initiative, maturity, integrity, accountability, and good judgment.
