Salary: $60,413 - $111,133 per year

This is skilled work in the AFIS Unit of the Police Division which involves the analysis, examination and comparison of friction ridge impressions recovered from evidence at crime scenes and known and unknown individuals. The incumbent also possesses knowledge of latent print processing techniques, follows proper chain of custody, laboratory and documentation procedures; communicates effectively with law enforcement, legal and government agencies regarding procedures and findings.

Duties

Examples of Assigned Duties:
  • Performs skilled work in the analysis, examination and comparison of friction ridge detail using ACE-V methodology
  • Obtains friction ridge impressions from deceased and unknown individuals for identification purposes
  • Records contemporaneous bench notes regarding examinations
  • Issues Certificates of Analysis to be submitted as evidence in courtroom proceedings
  • Enters friction ridge skin impressions in local, state and federal databases for searching and retention
  • Testifies as an expert witness in courtroom proceedings
  • Ensures that proper chain of custody is maintained for evidence
  • Consults when requested regarding latent print processing, recovery and preservation techniques
  • Assists in training latent print examination techniques to members of the Division, law enforcement and the community
  • Stays current with updates, recommendations and court decisions related to the latent print scientific community
  • Effectively communicates conclusions of analyses and examinations to law enforcement and in legal proceedings
  • Performs related work as assigned

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a 4-year bachelor's degree in forensic or a physical or natural science; and two (2) years of work experience as a fingerprint technician (certification by the International Association for Identification is preferred); OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
