Duties

Tasks
  • Stores, maintains, and disposes of law enforcement property, evidence, and supplies; receives, maintains, and inventories property and materials submitted as evidence by law enforcement staff; assists with booking evidence; transports evidence for criminal examination and court presentation; testifies in court regarding evidence maintenance procedures and the chain of custody of evidence; notifies owners of evidence release procedures; disposes of evidence through auctions, burns, seizures through R.I.C.O., and burials; coordinates the auction of property.
  • Communicates with courts on case status and evidence needed; prepares and maintains variety of logs, records, and files related to the handling and maintenance of evidence; packages and transports property for mailing to outside agencies; receives lost property information and maintains lost property file; identifies owners of found or recovered property utilizing stolen and lost property files; catalogues and marks all evidence; assists case officers in the processing of crime scenes; analyzes fingerprints for evidentiary purposes.
  • Identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence; inventories materials; monitors bicycle storage area to ensure proper storage of bicycles; assists with crime scene processing; performs related non-sworn public safety services, including finger printing.
  • Performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing, various clerical work; answers questions and provides information to the public; inputs and retrieves a variety of public safety information using a computer terminal;
  • All cases involving property/evidence shall be assigned a unique department generated log number that is maintained in the evidence room and is sequential. Each case shall be inventoried and documented on the evidence report as to location in the evidence room, number of items and any unique information that’s necessary for tracking purposes. All cases shall then be entered into the Spillman database for tracking while active, up to and including disposal/return or retention of individual cases. Log numbers are maintained in the blue binder for the current year.
  • Daily checks of the evidence area are necessary to the evidence areas have occurred. Daily checks of the walk-in refrigerator and freezer are necessary to ensure proper functioning of each. This also allows for review of packaging to ensure no tampering has occurred. Check for vermin during this inspection.

Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics

Knowledge of:
  • Records management and inventory techniques.
  • Basic techniques of photography.
  • Basic organization and functions of a municipal law enforcement agency.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • The geographic features and streets within the area served and the surrounding jurisdictions.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment.
  • Business letter writing and basic report preparation.
Skill in:
  • The maintenance and control of evidence, including storage and maintenance of chain of custody.
  • Organization, tracking, and filing records and property
  • Working in a fast-paced environment; multitasking
  • Fingerprinting techniques and obtaining usable latent fingerprints.
  • Communicating effectively and obtaining information from upset and irate citizens.
  • Operating office equipment, including a computer terminal, teletype, and other office equipment.
  • Maintaining and accounting for law enforcement property and evidence.
  • Testifying in court.
  • Willing to work various shifts as assigned.
Other Characteristics:
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. and climb stairs.
  • Author law enforcement reports.
  • Testify in court.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One (1) year of work experience involving frequent public contact and the interpretation of rules and regulations, preferably in a municipal police department.
  • Written exam passing score 70%. (notices will be sent when posting closes)
  • Valid AZ driver’s license.
  • Applicant must not have experimented with illegal substances within two (2) years of application.
  • Employment contingent upon passing law enforcement background and polygraph examination.
