Property & Evidence Technician

Salary: $49,920.00 Annually

Under general supervision, the Property & Evidence Technician will be responsible for the care, custody and control the police property room including all items and evidence held by the Police Department; maintaining legal chain-of-custody, testifying in court, maintaining records, preparing reports, fingerprinting the public, and crime scene responsibilities as outlined. This function will also be responsible in a quartermaster capacity for the management of department-owned property to include inventory, auditing and issuing of such.

Duties

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Examines and corrects transactions to ensure accuracy; prepares entries and reconciles property reports
  • Assists in preparation of inventory and property disposal
  • Transports evidence to and from lab
  • Assists Detectives and other personnel in property control, management of cash receipts and reconciles offense reports to property tags.
  • Inventories department assets; maintains and updates property lists, prepares related reports.
  • Performs accounting and financial calculations and analysis.
  • Responds to crime scenes, evaluates the scene and conducts searches for evidence utilizing disciplines related to crime scene investigation.
  • Measures and/or photographs crime scenes, evidence, etc.
  • Documents, collects, packages, preserves, and processes evidence.
  • Utilizes alternate light sources, chemical and physical processes, scientific methods and equipment for the detection and collection of evidence.
  • Processes evidence and crime scenes for latent fingerprints, utilizing both chemical and powder processes.
  • Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documentation of work completed.
  • Testifies as an expert witness in court regarding analysis and procedures, after being declared by the judge, an expert in their field of crime scene investigation.
  • Verifies, posts and records a variety of financial transactions; prepares and maintains database, records and a variety of periodic and special financial, accounting and statistical reports.
  • Enters and retrieves information using standard word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Reconciles transactions and data as directed; records changes and resolves differences, maintains the accuracy of the accounting and financial records.
  • Generates and assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial, summary and technical reports.
  • Performs general office support duties such as opening and routing mail and deliveries; preparing correspondence; filing and record keeping; and duplicating and distributing various written materials.
  • Assists customers, departments, and employees by providing answers and information regarding job-related information, updates files and appropriate department members of action items.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment by participating in solutions to problems as they occur.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, and/or Certifications Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • The applicant must meet all requirements for compliance with Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS).
  • Experience with typing; previous training on: Office 365 applications, radio dispatching, telephone systems, and other general office equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of the police property room and evidence control function
  • Knowledge of terminology and practices of police department operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of practices and techniques of automated and manual inventory control systems
  • Knowledge of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment: computer, printer, telephone, copy machine, calculator, fax machine, etc.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Skill in organizing and planning work assignments.
  • Ability to maintain and reconcile accounts, records, reports and journals.
  • Ability to navigate multiple computer systems, applications, and utilize search tools to find information.
  • Ability to type at a corrected rate of 40 words per minute.
  • Ability to multi-task; remain calm and act resourcefully in the performance of job duties.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memorandums.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and reach conclusions; deal with problems involving several variables.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers and employees as needed.
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to exercise discretion with confidential matters.
  • Ability to apply best practices in carrying out work responsibilities without the need for detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and. talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and/or stand; occasionally is required to walk, kneel, climb or balance. The employee must have the ability to safely pull, push, lift, and carry item(s) weighing up to forty (40) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
