Evidence/Records Management Technician

Eagle County Sheriff's Office, Eagle, Colorado

Salary: $29.33 - $41.06 per hour

The Evidence/Records Technician is responsible for preserving the integrity of evidence, maintaining accurate records, and managing the chain of custody. They must stay informed about relevant laws and procedures, and prepare evidence as needed. Carefully maintains & secures all property, evidence & other materials brought to the Department for categorization & safe-keeping from the time of submission to final disposal.

Duties

Essential Functions:
  • Preserve the condition of any property/evidence from the time of submission (after being collected from crime scenes, turned in as Found property, or submitted for safekeeping.
  • Prepare & maintain records of daily evidence activities in accordance with Department policy & procedures.
  • Ensure the Chain of Custody for property & evidence is properly documented on paper & in computer records. Such written records are periodically verified with physical evidence.
  • Understands & keeps current with all Federal, State, & Departmental guidelines in order to make decisions regarding all items on a case-by-case basis & effectively respond to inquiries &/or requests regarding such items in safe-keeping.
  • Prepare evidence, or copies of evidence, as needed by attorneys, officers or others who are allowed access, while ensuring the integrity & documentation of the evidence as ownership is transferred.
  • Regularly purge property & evidence that is ready for destruction or return to owners, in order to effectively utilize storage space, adhere to laws & guidelines, & minimize the number of items under the Sheriff's Office’s responsibility.
  • Communicate effectively with officers to ensure efficient tracking of evidence, disposition of cases & the release/destruction of items. Communicate with Evidence/Property Owners regarding such releases by written notification of other documented contact for file.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, using cleaning supplies, to ensure appropriate health & safety standards are met in the workspace.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification, or Registration:
  • Associate's degree in forensic sciences, criminal justice, crime scene technology, or a related discipline
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
  • Successful completion of NCIC/CCIC certification & firearms handling
  • Colorado Public Notary Certification is preferred but will be required to obtain within 6 months of the hire date.
  • CORA (Colorado Open Records Act) is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be able to successfully complete a polygraph test, psychological exam, fitness test,
  • physical, drug screen and detailed background investigation.
  • Must not have used illegal drugs within the past 3 years or marijuana within the past 1 year.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felonies or any acts involving domestic violence.
  • Must list the past 10 years of work experience.
  • Demonstrating drive and commitment to work.
