Inventory Control Specialist – Property Room

Under direct supervision of the Property Room Sergeants, the Inventory Control Specialist is responsible for managing the intake, cataloging, storage, and disposition of evidence and property under state and federal laws, as well as department policies and procedures. Duties

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evidence and Property Intake: Independently manage the acceptance and initial cataloging of evidence and property. Ensure all items are meticulously logged and secured upon receipt.
  • Cataloging and Record Management: Maintain a comprehensive electronic records system for all received items. Ensure accuracy and accessibility of records for auditing and operational purposes.
  • Storage Management: Oversee and ensure the proper packaging and storage of evidence, including sensitive, hazardous, and toxic materials. Implement and manage storage protocols to maintain the integrity and security of stored items.
  • Legal Compliance and Procedures: Stay updated on and ensure adherence to state and federal laws regarding evidence handling. Regularly review and update departmental policies related to evidence and property management.
  • Release and Transfer of Property: Handle the processing of property release requests, coordinating with officers, property owners, the District Attorney’s Office, the courts, and other agencies. Maintain detailed records of all transfers and releases.
  • Audit and Inventory Control: Conduct and oversee regular inventory audits to ensure accuracy and accountability. Identify and rectify discrepancies in inventory records.
  • Communication and Reporting: Serve as a liaison between the evidence room and other departmental units, ensuring effective communication and timely reporting of evidence-related issues.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, or Computer Forensics

Requirements

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with a preferred field of study in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in inventory control, or a closely related field preferably within a law enforcement or legal setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to manage and lead a team.
  • High proficiency in database management and related software.
  • NOTE: An equivalent combination of education, and experience may be evaluated for consideration.
Preferences
  • Experience handling evidence or in a law enforcement setting is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements, compliance issues, and best practices in evidence management.
  • Bilingual.
  • Knowledge of E-trace, Open Fox, JWEB, One Solution RMS, and FileOnQ programs.
