This position has the responsibility of safeguarding the storage of, and accounting for, a large collection of case evidence, items for safekeeping, and found property. The position requires working at crime scenes, conducting forensic examinations, and processing evidence utilizing forensic techniques in the lab, preparing field and lab reports, and testifying to findings.
This position is distinguished from other classifications by the responsibility of receiving, maintaining, tracking, and transporting valuable items, illegal substances, evidentiary property, and its specialized knowledge and training in forensics. Work is performed in a secure facility, which requires independent work without direct supervision. Thorough understanding that no item can be misplaced or handled inappropriately is essential, as this could seriously jeopardize the City’s ability to successfully prosecute cases. The position requires on-call availability and after-hours response to work. Close work with evidence and property exposes the incumbent to occasional hazardous materials.
