Crime Scene Technician

Salary: $30,700.00 per year

Under the general supervision of the Crime Scene Supervisor, the Crime Scene Technician is responsible for the crime scenes and evidence of all criminal cases assigned to the crime scene staff. The Crime Scene Technician performs related work as required, including, but not limited to all criminal investigations. The Crime Scene Technician is responsible for work of above average difficulty consisting of leant evidence comparisons on assigned cases and the preparation of reports concerning the disposition of all assignments. The Crime Scene Technician is required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency situations. Work may involve an element of personal danger.

Duties

Essential Functions
  • Attending the crime scene to lift fingerprints, take pictures and prepare follow-up reports including evidence gathering.
  • Attends court to testify and present evidence.
  • Processes suspects which include obtaining DNA, photographing, recovering evidence.
  • Coordinates activities with other officers and police departments.
  • Types reports, records, and statements, keeps detailed records, for possible court use; and works closely with the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Regularly checks the work and gives specific instructions and assistance when special problems arise.
  • Assist and advise subordinates on proper action to be taken on all doubtful cases.
  • Reports to supervisor on any off-standard conditions.
  • Maintains all the evidence and the section’s inventory.
  • Organizes the section’s disposition on property and surplus inventory.
  • Assumes charge of police activities on the scene of major crimes.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, training schools, and reviews literature and publications to keep abreast of current problems and practices in the field.
  • Submit certified letter to person who have interest in property seized.
  • Complete investigators and administration requests.
  • Keep track of items that are for auction and maintain a record of its paperwork.
  • Able to carry 50 lbs.
  • Performs other general duties and responsibilities of a similar nature as required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
  • Preferred bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice, or related field or 2 years of experience working as a Crime Scene Technician or/and related field.
  • High school diploma
  • Must have a current valid Class ‘C’ Texas Driver’s License from the department of Public Safety.
  • The applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant to be rejected for consideration.
  • Officer’s school ID
  • Crime scene search school
  • Be free of criminal charges and criminal convictions.
  • Applicant must take and pass a drug, physical, and pre-placement screening administered by the City of Pharr.
  • Must be proficient in working with personal computers, typewriters, and general office equipment and have knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and e-mail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of approved principles, practices and procedures of police work and ordinances governing police work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the supervisors, subordinates, other departments and staff, other police agencies and the public.
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in English and Spanish language.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently independent of constant supervision.
  • Ability to perform well in stressful situations.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of different types of tasks without the variety itself causing a loss of efficiency despite interruptions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.
  • Ability to understand, communicate and carry out moderately complex detailed and often sensitive information effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior, exercising honesty and integrity, respect, confidentiality, and fairness in the execution of their official responsibilities.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and be willing to report for duty on short notice at any hour of the day or night.
  • Skills in self-discipline, dependability, and ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritize multiple tasks and demands to accomplish outcomes.
  • Skills in working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities. This employee is delegated the authority necessary for the performance of assigned duties within departmental restrictions and is directly accountable to the criminal investigation section captain.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with a 40-hour work week. Must have the ability to work flexible hours, shift schedules, including holidays, evenings, weekends, and on-call. Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.
