The Crime Scene Tech/Analyst collects, preserves, processes and handles evidence from crime scenes to assist sworn officers in apprehension and prosecution of crimes and to perform other duties and responsibilities as required by the sheriff’s department.

Duties

Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Responds to crime scenes on a 24-hour basis.
  • Locates, collects, preserves and analyzes physical evidence present at crime scenes, traffic fatalities and search warrants.
  • Processes crime scenes and evidence utilizing various chemical processes (some hazardous), physical techniques, latest scientific methods and equipment.
  • Photographs major crime scenes, autopsies and traffic fatalities.
  • Fingerprints suspects, deceased, and defendants for identification purposes.
  • Evaluates the quality of latent prints submitted and developed to determine suitability for comparison and AFIS entry.
  • Performs analysis, comparison and identifications of inked and latent finger, palm and foot prints to known standards.
  • Testifies in courts of law as an expert witness.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies and courts when requested.
  • Assists with criminal investigations when needed.
  • Evaluates evidence and submits to appropriate crime labs for analysis.
  • Completes detailed supplemental offense reports, crime scene logs and other required documentation.
  • Prepares advanced forensic graphics, photographs, diagrams, charts, sketches, drawings and fingerprint photographs to document crime scenes; give court presentations, presents analysis, and develops investigative tools and training aids ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Evaluates a crime scene utilizing disciplines related to crime scene investigation; logs all activities accurately and appropriately to ensure clarity and transparency for cases and processing.
  • Assist in property room audits/inspections and manage evidence intake, storage and chain of custody.
  • Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Knowledge of:
  • Law enforcement methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques.
  • Criminal law and procedure with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies including rules of evidence pertaining to the seizure and preservation of evidence.
  • Offensive and defensive weapons terms and theories.
  • Operational characteristics and use of firearms and other modern sheriff equipment.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Departmental rules and regulations; policies, procedures and directives.
Ability to:
  • Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places.
  • Understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
  • Learn the operation of standard equipment and facilities required in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations.
    • Reading and writing.
    • Operating assigned equipment.
    • Communicating with others.
  • Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve:
    • Traveling from site to site.
    • Responding to emergency situations.
    • Working closely with others.
    • Irregular working hours.
    • Exposure to body fluids.
  • Maintain Physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
    • Operating assigned office equipment.
    • Driving an automobile.
    • Moving equipment and injured and deceased persons.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years experience in crime analysis, law enforcement, criminal investigations, or related field.
  • Three (3) years experience in database programming, GIS, or use of other advanced data analytics software.
  • Experience utilizing Computer-Aided dispatch systems, Records Management Systems (RMS), and other databases containing relevant investigative data.
  • Preferred Bachelor degree in statistics, data analytics, computer science/information systems, police science, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, or related field.
Certificate, License, Registrations
  • Valid Driver License
  • Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA)-Preferred
  • Intelligence Analyst Certification-Preferred
  • Industry recognized certification such as Alpha Group, International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence (IALEIA) or International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA)-Preferred.
