Evidence Technician

Salary: $35,360.00 - $38,896.00 Annually

We are looking for an Evidence Technician to join the City of Charleston's Police Department! In this role, you will process evidence, return property to citizens, and support daily operations of the Evidence Unit.

Duties

In this role, you will:
  • Receive various types of evidence and property such as; money, jewelry, documents, drugs, weapons, DNA evidence, biological evidence, and other items confiscated, seized, collected, and received by law enforcement.
  • Ensure all property and evidence are preserved, accounted for, and recorded according to local, state, and federal regulations and laws.
  • Verify ownership and authorization for release of property or evidence.
  • Perform validations on stolen/recovered weapons monthly to comply with NCIC rules and regulations.
  • Turn over any evidence for testing to Forensics and assists with evidence and property audits.
  • Transport, testify and assist with evidence and property items in court proceedings.
  • Receive, record, and execute court orders to destroy evidence and arrange for the destruction of weapons and contraband in accordance with regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Basic Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • NCIC 40 hour certification or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software.
