Duties

Principal Duties:
  • Ability to assist processing traffic crashes, crime scenes and collecting evidence. Duties includes identifying and collecting physical evidence and documenting the scene with sketches, diagrams, and photographs.
  • Prepare police reports. Testify and produce evidence for the court regarding the evidence function, evidence procedures and chain of custody. May be classified as an expert witness by the court in areas related to testimony.
  • Prepare evidence for submission to crime lab. Transport narcotics, evidence, information, and documentation to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations or other laboratories.
  • Process/compare fingerprints and enter them in AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System).
  • Manage property and evidence in accordance with policies, procedures and laws as needed.
  • Attend autopsies and assist with death investigations.
  • Utilize advanced evidence collection equipment including 3D scanners, drones, and computer software.
  • Performs essential duties and additional tasks in a manner which enhances City Attributes.
Working Environment:
  • Work is performed inside public and private buildings, in outdoor areas, vehicles, and court under routine and stressful conditions. Work requires confidentiality, honesty, integrity, judgment, and problem solving; frequent driving, reading, verbal and written communication; sight (near and far vision and ability to distinguish colors), hearing, detailed work, and contact with citizens who are angry, upset, and/or distraught. Work requires occasional contact with individuals who might pose a threat to employees’ safety potentially requiring the use of less-lethal weapons. Work requires handling items of biohazardous nature, including, but not limited to, body fluids, drugs, and carcinogenic chemicals. Also includes the handling of multiple types of weapons. Typically involves shift work hours but may require irregular/protracted work hours.
  • Requires frequent use of fingers and hands, which includes light lifting and carrying (less than 15 lbs.) walking, standing, sitting, bending/stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching, twisting, and squatting. Requires occasional exposure to sun and other adverse or inclement weather, slippery/uneven surfaces, and noise. Occasionally may require working varied hours that include evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular or protracted hours including unanticipated overtime and after hours call out. Frequent moderate (15 to 49 lbs.) lifting and map reading. Occasionally may be exposed to bio-hazardous material, blood borne pathogens, and STD’s or other health considerations.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Qualifications:
  • Any combination of experience and education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and minimum of two years of experience in working with criminal evidence.
Special Qualifications:
  • Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Previous experience in inventory management, evidence collection and processing (to include photography, sketching).
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel are desirable.
  • Must be capable of multi-tasking working with staff, the public and several projects at the same time.
