Forensic Services Technician

Salary: $24.31 per hour

The Forensic Service Technician’s primary responsibilities include but are not limited to documenting crime scenes and evidence, identifying and preserving items of evidentiary value, testifying in court proceedings, all while using established and approved scientific methods.

Duties

The following are required duties of this position:
  • Promptly respond to crime scenes at any time required (on-call status).
  • Properly process and forensically map crime scenes.
  • Collect and document evidence at crime scenes with photography/videography.
  • Physically collect and document evidence at crime scenes.
  • Properly prepare all documents for evidence submission.
  • Professionally communicate with a variety of individuals including victims, officers, and detectives.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

The following are the educational and/or training requirements for this position:
  • Must be able to read and comprehend the English language directives, training materials, and all other documentation required for duties.
  • Must be able to complete the Forensic Services Unit Field Training Program.
  • Must be able to attend the National Forensic Academy (10 weeks) at the first available date.
Preferred Experience - The following experience is required for this position:
  • Minimum of one-year related experience preferred.
  • Completed internship if applying from outside the agency preferred.
  • Completion and documentation of three forensic ride-along experiences. (Required only if currently employed by KCSO).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - The following non-physical knowledge, skills and abilities are required for this position:
  • Must be willing and able to thoroughly learn and be tested on the various equipment and techniques used to process all types of evidentiary items, including but not limited to digital SLR cameras and photography techniques, laser scanners and forensic mapping techniques, latent print development and documentation, bloodstain pattern analysis, and shooting scene reconstruction.
Physical Abilities - The following physical ability(s) is/are required for this position:
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and chemically process crime scenes as needed.
  • Must be physically able to perform assigned tasks and work in all conditions and climates.
  • Must maintain the ability to work any hours, shift and days off if required for major incidents.
  • Position-Specific Responsibilities
  • Executes other responsibilities as assigned by the Sheriff, Chief Deputy or supervisor.
Tools, Machinery, and Equipment - Ability to operate or use the following machinery and/or equipment is required for this position:
  • Basic photography skills (Shutter Speed/Aperture/Oblique Lighting) preferred
  • Cell Phone Usage (On-Call and monitored 24/7)
  • E-Mail monitored and checked consistently
  • Basic computer and typing skills
  • Chemical processing
  • Police radio usage
  • Able to safely operate a full size SUV
