Crime Scene Technician

Longview Police Department, Longview, Texas

Salary: $43,690.40 Annually

Responds to a location where a crime has occurred or an incident that appears suspicious. Responsible for locating, identifying and collecting physical evidence that may be later used in prosecution. This position is also responsible for accurate reporting, maintaining chain of custody and evidence preparation. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Duties

Examples of Duties
  • Evaluates the scene and conducts searches while identifying evidence. Prepares and maintains various types of law enforcement documentation.
  • Responds to various types of crime scenes; evaluates crime scenes; conducts searches to identify, document, collect, package, preserve and process evidence; attends autopsies.
  • Locates, identifies, and classifies latent prints; make comparisons to known suspects, witnesses, or complainants; submits latent prints into a computerized database for possible matching to previously identified fingerprints.
  • Utilizes photographic and video equipment to document crime scenes.
  • Utilizes alternate light sources, chemical and powder physical processes, scientific methods and equipment for the detection and collection of evidence.
  • Attends and participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as a representative of the City of Longview.
  • Testifies in court, as needed, regarding the collection and processing of evidence.
  • Maintains an on-call schedule with the other crime scene technician and crime scene detectives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Biology, Chemistry, or related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain, within two years, a latent and palm print course completion or blood stain pattern analysis.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain, within two years, a palm print, fingerprint, blood stain pattern and shooting reconstruction course certifications.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a variety of environments to include indoors and outdoors.
  • Exposure to cold, heat, rain and possible hazards/chemicals at a crime scene.
  • Subject to sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
