Property Specialist

Salary: $51,551.16 - $66,575.40 Annually

The Property Specialist maintains control of evidence and property in the custody of the Police Department and performs inventories on a routine basis while providing customer service for multiple agencies, officers, victims, and suspects. Note: This position will be subject to handling firearms, broken glass, syringes, odoriferous materials, blood, urine, and other body specimens that may come from diseased persons or clothing that may be infected with hazardous biological materials.

Duties

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. This position:
  • Receives, verifies, records and stores evidence, lost, stolen and found property.
  • Assists the public in identification and return of lost or stolen property.
  • Prepares auction of applicable unclaimed property.
  • Transports and disposes of property as required by law.
  • May be required to work with flammable fluids or otherwise hazardous substances.
  • Assists other agencies with evidence requests and transports evidence to forensic laboratories, other law enforcement agencies, and courts of law.
  • Maintains accurate chain of custody in evidence management system; drafts and types correspondence to other police agencies, courts, vendors, and property owners.
  • Responds to crime scenes to assist Officers and Detectives with evidence.
  • Testifies in courts of law to the evidence procedures chain of custody.
  • Must have the ability to operate motor vehicles.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Police Chief.
  • Must have the ability to work variable shifts.

 Earn a Degree in Crime Scene Investigation, Forensic Science, Computer Forensics or Forensic Psychology

Requirements

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must be 21 years of age by date of hire.
  • One (1) year of experience in customer service working directly with the public.
Special Consideration Given to Applicants With:
  • Clerical experience involving organization and maintenance of records.
  • Prior legal or law enforcement experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Successful passing of drug screen (tested for all federally controlled substances, including Cannabis).
  • Ability to lift and move large pieces of property removed from illegal campsites.
  • Ability to work four (4) 10-hour shifts Monday - Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during training phase.
  • Flexibility to be trained under direct one on one supervision throughout probationary period.
  • Ability to obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance upon hire.
  • Ability to obtain Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) Certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license by date of hire. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver’s license within 30 days.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
